A Modern TCP/IP Stack
by Jeffrey Hsu
Abstract
Largely due to 4.3BSD, the TCP protocol has become the most widely used protocol in the Internet today. However, the protocol itself has evolved greatly since Van Jacobson and Karel's seminal congestion control work in 4.3BSD. In this paper, we describe the new improvements to the TCP protocol, our experience implementing these improvements in FreeBSD and DragonFly BSD, and measure results in both simulated and real-world use.
The improvements implemented in DragonFly BSD include NewReno, Larger Initial Congestion Window, Limited Transmit, Early Retransmit, Eifel Detection, SACK, and Appropriate Byte Counting.
